Cloud computing is the delivery of computing services over the Internet. The resources can be applications, tools, data storage, servers, databases, networking, and software. Learn more about cloud computing in this article.

Why should you use a cloud computing service?

Unlike before when files are kept on a hard drive or storage device, since cloud-based storage was born, you can save all files to a remote database. Your electronic device can access the software programs and the data as long as it has access to the web. People opt for cloud computing because it can help them save cost, increase productivity, speed and efficiency as well as their business’s performance, and security.

There are many cloud service providers that a person or a company can rent access to their storages. By using cloud computing services, you can save the cost of owning and maintaining your own IT infrastructure. You just need to pay for what you use and only use the service when you need it.

How many types of cloud computing services are there?

There are plenty of options for you when it comes to cloud computing services. Also, the services provide users with plenty of functions, including email, storage, backup, data retrieval, creating and testing apps, analyzing data, audio and video streaming or delivering software on demand.

Although cloud computing is quite new, many different organizations have been using it. It can provide services for big corporations, small businesses, nonprofits, government agencies, and even individual consumers. Here are 3 main types of cloud computing services:

#1: Software-as-a-service (SaaS)

You can find this type in Microsoft Office 365, it involves the granting of licenses of a software application to customers. The licenses are provided through a pay-as-you-go model or on-demand.

#2: Infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS)

It uses IP-based connectivity as part of an on-demand service to deliver everything from operating systems to servers and storage. This type of service allows clients to not spend money on purchasing software or servers. They can procure these resources in an on-demand service. You can find this in IBM Cloud and Microsoft Azure.

#3: Platform-as-a-service (PaaS)

This is the most complex type of cloud-based computing service. It is quite similar to SaaS, however, instead of delivering software online, PaaS can create software that is delivered via the Internet. It includes platforms like Force.com and Heroku.

The history of cloud computing

Although the concept of computing as a service has been around since the 1960s, cloud computing is still a new service. Business can actually use it since the early 2000s.

Back in the 1960s, computer bureaus allowed businesses to rent time on a mainframe. But when the PC arrived, it was much easier for companies to own a computer. So these services were overtaken and companies would store huge amounts of data on corporate data centers. However, this concept has resurfaced again and again from the late 1990s to early 2000s. Then cloud computing took over until now.

What are the advantages of cloud computing?

There are many benefits companies get from cloud-based software. First of all, it offers them the ability to use software from any device so that users can move their files and settings to other devices smoothly.

In addition, cloud computing is not just about accessing files on multiple devices. It also allows users to check their email on any computer. These services like Dropbox or Google Drive are also very commonly used by users to store files. Not to mention, they can easily back up their music, files, and photos, in case their hard drive crashes.

More importantly, cloud computing service offers big businesses huge cost-saving potential. They no longer need to purchase, construct, and maintain information management technology and infrastructure.

What are the disadvantages of cloud computing?

Although cloud computing has been a useful and effective solution for businesses. There is still concern regarding security, especially for medical records and financial reports.

There is encryption to protect vital information, but risk is still there when the encryption key is lost. Also, because many people are accessing and manipulating information through a single portal, there can be inadvertent mistakes in the system.
